In this course, we will cover:
  • Route Mapping: Learn how to research and plan your own route from start to finish.
  • Alternate Route Planning: Identify and plan potential alternate routes in case of changes in weather or water conditions.
  • Landmarks: Note key landmarks along the route for navigation and location identification.
  • Estimate Timing: Include estimated times to starting, when breaks will happen, and arrival at the endpoint each day.
  • Rest & Campsites: Designate potential rest points and campsites along the route.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential hazards and how you plan to mitigate them.
  • Tide Tables: If applicable, include tide tables to understand how tides will impact your journey.
  • Water Conditions: Research about currents, wave conditions, and water temperature.
  • Communication Plan: Detail how and when you plan to communicate your status during the trip.
  • Emergency Contact: The person you will be communicating with and has your route plan to give to local authorities if things go astray.
  • Weather Forecast: Check the weather forecast for the duration of your trip and plan accordingly.
  • Gear List: Include a comprehensive list of gear and provisions you'll be carrying.

  • Weekly in-person 2.5 hour learning sessions January 17 - March 6 (Wednesdays at 7 - 9:30)
